The Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) for important commodities, as well as clarifies the opportunities and challenges businesses will face when Vietnam signs an FTA with the European Union.

The workshop was organized by the European Trade and Investment Policy Support Project (EU-MUTRAP), in collaboration with VCCI Da Nang.

The EU is currently one of Vietnam's leading partners in economy, trade and investment. According to the General Statistics Office, in 2012, the EU rose to the first position to become Vietnam's largest export market with a turnover of US$ 20.3 billion, up 22.5% compared to 2011 and accounting for 17. 7% of the total export turnover of goods of the country.

Talking about the advantages in bilateral trade relations, MUTRAP project consultant Claudio Dordi shared: “The EU will reduce taxes on products and thus Vietnam's exports will increase. Vietnam will reduce taxes and enjoy lower prices for high-quality raw materials and technology imported from the EU. High quality services will be exported to Vietnam and your business will become more competitive in the long run. The EU will increase investment here and Vietnam will have to improve the legal framework in non-commercial areas.”

However, in the FTA trade integration relationship, Vietnamese businesses will also have to face new challenges. “Vietnam is forced to shift its legal frameworks towards protection of intellectual property rights, geographical indications for domestic products, environmental enforcement and labor laws… in an adequate and effective manner. . Vice Chairman of Binh Dinh Timber Association Nguyen Van Tham commented.
